They’re not asking to be heard they’re shaping spaces that already
speak their truth. Identity isn’t added on or explained; it’s embedded, foundational, and alive in every
corner. Cultural fluency isn’t a flourish, it’s the architecture of how they live, lead, and create.

At the heart of this movement are Lidia and Cynthia Pérez,
co-founders of La Peña, a nonprofit arts organization in Austin, Texas, dedicated to promoting Latino
cultural expression. We met Cynthia during SXSW 2024. All around us, there were tech launches, flashy
installations, and new developments going up fast. But right there in the middle of it all was this
beautiful little gallery calm, grounded, and full of soul.
La Peña felt like a cultural charging station. While everything
around it buzzed with what’s next AI extravaganza, it held steady to what matters. Inspired by South
American peñas, community gatherings for art and music, and the legacy of Las Manitas Avenue Café, they
have created a sanctuary for heritage and creativity in the heart of a rapidly changing city. Their work
is not a reaction to trends. It is a continuation of legacy.
La Peña has always been more than a gallery. It’s been a
gathering place, a storytelling altar, and a frontline for Latinx expression in the middle of a rapidly
changing city. From murals that reflect resistance, to youth poetry nights echoing in two languages, she
has witnessed and documented the shifts: from the people who built these blocks to the new faces moving
in. Through it all, she honors what’s been carried, lost, and reborn.

every brushstroke, of immigrants who turned survival into art, and of young artists today remixing tradition
with bold, defiant vision. This place, this presence, is a lesson in continuity.
